DES21 Ode to the Cube

Design Statement
Produce a maquette of a cubic sculpture, at a scale of 1” = 1’- 0”.  The sculpture will consist of a rectangular base, 6’ x 6’ x 1’; a solid cube, 3’ x 3’ x 3’, and a supporting structure that will hold the cube a minimum of 7 feet above the top of the base.

Solution
I was inspired by Hacer (Gerardo Gomez-Martinez) and his approach in creating life-sized origami sculptures around New York. My project was entirely constructed using origami techniques, from the crane to the cube to the base. Using cardstock to form the base and cube provided more structural integrity while maintaining clean lines, and the cranes were created using regular paper of varying sizes in order to create its unique origami form and crisp creases and folds. The human figure that accompanied this piece was also constructed out of paper using origami, consisting of the main body and two boots. Wire and glue was added to support the structure, but were placed to be hidden so as to provide an illusion of the cranes holding up the cube.

I utilized a monochromatic white color palette, which allowed the piece to gain a sense of purity and minimalism. While the two cranes on the side do not provide any structural support to the piece, they balance the piece visually, especially as the central crane that  supports the cube is intentionally tilted at an angle that is dynamic and creates interest.
