Cockney rhyming slang was first used in the 19th century by costermongers so they could talk about illegal activity in front of police without any suspicion. Alongside costermonger slang, this merged with the dialect of the Romani and Yiddish occupiers of East London. The coming together of different cultures developed Cockney slang as a coded dialect, known to a small grouped community. This is represented within the poster design by the distortions in the type, making the viewer have to decode it slightly to make it completely legible. The posters have combined every day design studio life and the roots of East London due to the high number of creative’s occupying East London.
