The Middle Earth Series Book Jackets
objective For this project, the objective was to design an interesting set of three book jackets for book titles of our choosing. We needed to take this opportunity to help reflect our personal interests and passions through the final designs. The jacket needed to have a cover, spine, back, and inside flaps, incorporating the titles, imagery, summary, and information about the author.
solution For my books, I chose The Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit. I ended up creating a neatly designed cover, each having an illustration of an iconic sword, based on their counterparts from the movies. Around the sword, I added a circle, mirroring the “One Ring” while placing the Elvish script that is written on the “One Ring” around the ring in a light gray. Each book had a particular color associated with it, which changed the bar at the bottom, the ring, and the script text on the back. Any other text that was placed over the color was white, while anything else was black over the white background. For the inside flap for Tolkien, I decided to have his photo to be in black and white, keeping the neat look of the design.

The layouts of each book cover jacket. While the layout stays the same, the illustration of the blade and the color set to the book changes. Each book uses the accent color not only for the bar set on the bottom and for the ring, but also for J.R.R. Tolkien, the drop cap and starting text for the summary, and for the script-like text on the back.
For the typography, I chose to stick with Minion Pro for any body text. As for the book's title, author's name, and number on the spine, I went with Albertus Pro. The simpler sans serif font I used was Verlag, letting it be visible, not distracting to overpower the other choices. But for the script-like font on the back, I used Abdullah, due to its style being similar to the Elvish script that I place around the ring on the cover.
