// Self-sufficiency - thats what makes samsø unique. It´s a mecca for climate protection - Wind turbines, solar panels, straw combustion and heat exchangers that extract heat from cows milk - generating 40 % more energy than the island consumes. The energy surplus is going to denmarks mainland, where it replaces electricity that would otherwise be generated through other processes. Samsøs transformation has its origin in an experiment by the danish government where four islands were asked to compete in putting up the most convincing plan to cut their carbon outputs and focus on renewable energy - Samsø won.
