YINGGELISHI | Jonathan Stalling's Interlanguage Art
Co-author, Editor and Book Design
As the co-author, editor and book designer, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Jonathan Stalling on the book YINGGELISHI: Jonathan Stalling's Interlanguage Art. The book explores the fascinating art of Jonathan Stalling, which employs principles of semiotics, communication, and cybernetics to trace and organize the history of human language development. Through his work, Stalling introduced the theory of resonance, which is a key aspect in understanding the characteristics of interlanguage art.

Our aim in this book was to delve into the construction principles of human cognitive and semantic frameworks. During interviews with Jonathan Stalling, we explored the background and origins of his interlanguage art, the influences of both Eastern and Western cultures, and its contemporary significance.

We hope that this book provides an insightful introduction that traces the historical development of intertextuality and the complex relationships it has with various forms of communication. By exploring these concepts, we aimed to offer readers a deeper understanding of the evolution of human language and the powerful role it plays in shaping our world today. As a designer and editor, it was my goal to create a visually stunning book that effectively conveyed the ideas and concepts discussed within.
"YINGGELISHI" is the Chinese transliteration of "English" meaning "English Regulated Verse as Beautiful Poetry." The artworks explore the Chinese-English interlanguage of our modern moment, exposing algorithms and patenting processes for an interactive learning experience. Each section meditates on the relationship between English and Chinese, culture, and technology.
