Based in Washington State, Joel Vandenbrink has had a pioneering presence in craft brewing and cider making and founded Two Beers Brewing and Seattle Cider Company. Outside of entrepreneurial endeavors, Joel Vandenbrink is passionate about giving back to the community. In 2016, his company coordinated with Whole Foods to create and distribute a special cider that benefitted City Fruit’s Save Seattle’s Apples campaign.
Nearly one-third of the urban fruit crop in the region was composted following harvest. While City Fruit donated many of the excess applies to local food banks, those with small markings or blemishes were discarded in the compost. With the City Fruit campaign, that was reduced to nine percent, as a significant number of the blemished apples were collected, sorted, and pressed by its partnering cider company.
The resulting City Fruit Cider created from local 40 varieties was described as tart, tannic, and with minimal residual sweetness. Sold at Whole Foods for a limited time, proceeds went toward City Fruit’s ongoing efforts to collect and distribute apples for the less fortunate in the community, as well as to protect existing urban apple trees.
