Design Intensive - Orange Sky
DYB102 was a partnership design intensive with Orange Sky Laundry that gave us the opportunity to design a chair concept to assist in Orange Sky’s mission of  positively connecting communities.

When looking at the problem one of the main areas we thought we could expand upon was this thought of connection and community.

In Australia, 51% of people feel lonely for at least 1 day a week. A group particularly vulnerable to this issue are those that are homeless.

Especially through numerous Orange Sky videos the importance people place on social interaction and the chance to be able to catch up and interact with familiar faces at the scheduled times everywhere.

Mechanisms:
Chairs:
Disconnecting chairs (Singular and Configurable)
Kick out leg on chairs (Singular Config)
Table slides in rails on the bottom of the chairs, locking them in place to create the four config and securing the table as the floor.

Table:
Rail Sliding Table
Table keeps the chairs together (4 config)
Can be free standing or deployed / used as floor
Has inbuilt chess board / games board

Transportation:
Folds out Flat
Further compacts / folds
Placed / transported on the roof of the van

Addressing the problem of the chair we looked at How might we design a versatile chair for Orange Sky that encourages positive social connections whilst providing practicality and mobility.

The chair design gives agency to the volunteers to create a product that encourages conversation and relationships.

For example, by adding board games to the top of the tables we hope to strengthen bonds between people through fun and competitiveness.
