DYB102 Impact Lab: WIFT Design Pitch

DYV102 Impact Lab 2 : Design Intensive

This Design Intensive required five students (Alison Yu, Tamzym O'Reilly, Guy Stephen, Will Helmrich and Max Brockhurst) from different disciplines (Visual Communications, Architecture, Industrial Design) to brainstorm and refine a design solution for our Industry partner, Women In Film and Television (WIFT). The Design Intensive took place at QUT over 2.5 days and explored the background and insightful understandings relative to the issues facing the design problems in WIFT. Design tools were implemented to create a 3 minute visual pitch presentation to WIFT's representative, Bobbi-Lea, our peers and teaching team.

The Problem:
The background research conducted on WIFT revealed that its key issue was the lack of younger audiences. The organisation required greater exposure to engage and attract more users to join the membership program.

The design problem statement my team refined was how might we evoke empathy and educate young audiences (female, non-binary, male) through an immersive experience that is engaging and informative. Our specific target audience was women and men in grades 10 to 12. My team recognised that this issue was primarily targeted towards female and non-binary individuals, but we also wanted to educate men about WIFT and the challenges women encounter in the film industry. This is because we believe that it is important to educate both parties to raise more awareness on this problem.

Resolved Idea:
The resolved solution we designed was an engaging A Day In The Life Booth that will be set up at QUT open day with posters and brochures regarding information about WIFT. The booth will be stationed with WIFT's mentors and representatives who will be able to approach high school students who are interested in film and television. This booth will include an immersive and interactive element, 360 googles, that will be provided to all audience. This is the low-cost design solution will be used in conjunction with the booth to show users a 'look through the lens' of a female in the film industry.
How it works:
The 360 googles function by simple sliding a phone into the front section of the product. This allows users to experience a virtual photo or video that will display the workplace conditions women face to show not only young females but young men the male dominated film industry. We will also showcase scenes of women working with WIFT to empower the younger generation to embrace a positive attitude towards facing and overcoming these challenges.
The Impact:
Our design proposal will develop a community and new generation of women, men and non-binary individuals to work in the film and television industry. A Day In The Life booth along with the 360 googles, posters and brochures, will educate young high school students of the imbalance in the workforce. In addition, my team's solution will inform young people how there are effective organisations such as WIFT that can help and introduce them to the film industry. The immersive and educational interaction of the A Day In The Life expo will encourage a new wave of potential WIFT members and mentors.
