A Luminária Simplez foi resultado de um projeto acadêmico, proposto no Centro Universitário Belas Artes de São Paulo. A ideia era trabalhar com materiais com os quais ainda não tivessemos experiência, no caso, o aço inox.
The Simplez Lamp ("simples" in portuguese translates into "simple", and in this case, the "s" sounds the same as a "z", which suggests the shape of the object) was the result of an academic project, proposed at the Centro Universitário Belas Artes de São Paulo. The idea was to work with materials we had no experience with, and in my case, it was stainless steel.
Para reduzir custos, a peça de aço adquirida é sucateada, e foi comprada extremamente suja.
In order to reduce costs, a piece of scrapped stainless steel was bought, and it was extremely dirty.
Foi preciso limpá-la manualmente, fazendo uso de thinner (e muito esforço).
The piece had to be cleaned mannually, with thinner (and a lot of effort).
No final do processo, a peça parecia nova.
Enfim, chegou o momento de decidir exatamente o que iria produzir. Desta vez, procurei fazer algo que realmente fosse útil em minha rotina, então optei por uma luminária. Porém, achei que o aço por sí só não seria capaz de resultar em um produto agradável, tanto visual quanto funcionalmente. Então fui a procura de outro material...
At last, the time came for me to decide what to do. This time around, I decided to make something that I was actually going to use in my daily life, so I opted for a lamp. However, by then I decided the the steel alone wasn't enough to result in a pleasant product, both visually and functionally. So the search began for another material...
...E o encontrei. Em uma caçamba de lixo.
... And I found it. In a dumpster.
Uma maciça e intacta peça de pinho.
A solid and intact piece of pine wood.
Logo no começo, a combinação dos materiais e suas diferentes qualidades agradou.
Com isso em mente, resolvi trabalhar as propriedades de cada material; A leveza do aço e o aspecto maciço do pinho. Equilibrio tornou-se o tema principal da luminária, e algo que permitiu que ela sugerisse o próprio desenho.
With that in mind, I decided to develop each of those materials' properties; The lightness of the stainless steel and the solid aspect of the pine wood. Balance became the main theme for the lamp, something that allowed it to suggest it's own design.
Assim, o desenho foi resolvido; 3 peças, uma de aço e duas de madeira, um uma forma que sugere a levezaza do aço aliada à rusticidade do desenho natural do pinho.
And so the design was settled; 3 pieces, one steel, the other two wood, in a shape that suggests the lightness of the steel and the rusticity of the natural look of the pine.
As peças de pinho foram serradas e lixadas (eu não planejei usar essa camiseta).
The pine wood pieces were sawed and sanded (I did not plan on wearing that shirt).
Uma coisa que não pude prever foi a beleza real do pinho após ser lixado.
One thing I couldn't have predicted was the beauty of the pine once it was sanded.
Depois de perder certo tempo admirando, era hora de perfurar a madeira para acomodar o soquete da lâmpada.
After loosing a few minutes admiring it, it was time to drill the wood in order to make room for the bulb socket.
Com o buraco pronto, o pinho recebeu diversas camadas de seladora.
With the hole in place, the pieces of pine were treated to several layers of varnish coating.
Após tratar a madeira, o aço foi cortado em uma guilhotina.
After treating the wood, the steel was cut in a guillotine.
E foi dobrado em 70º graus.
And it was folded in 70º.

Madeira e aço foram juntos com o uso de cola de contato.
Wood and steel were glued with the use of contact glue.
Todas a peças finalmente coladas e secando. O soquete foi integrado com uma solução um tanto quanto comum, porém eficiente: cola quente.
All the pieces finally glued and left to dry. The socket was glued with a rather simple, but efficient method: hot glue.
A Luminária Simplez é ideal para mesas de desenho e estudo, proporcionando luz suave ao usuário.
The Simplez Lamp is ideal for drawing and studying desks, ensuring soft lighting for the user.
Como não faz uso de cúpula, a Simplez pode ser compartilhada com outras pessoas.
As it doesn't make use of a dome around the bulb, the Simplez can be shared with other people.
