Exploring Applique` with Fevicryl Fabric Glue

EXPLORING APPLIQUE` WITH FEVICRYL FABRIC GLUE
The brief for this project was to create a curriculum for students of art and design which focused on Applique` as a technique. The students would learn about different types of applique` that exists in India and around the world. Knowledge of stitching was not a prerequisite here as the focus was more on how to make it easier for the students and how this beautiful technique can be done by sticking as well. Usage of Fevicryl Fabric Glue was one of the main requirements here along with other Fevicryl products.

Inspiration was taken from the traditional techniques and various products were created . Please scroll below to see the creations
Pipli Applique` from Orissa (Modern Motifs)

Taking cue from Mata Ni Pachedi, a travelling story book ( The Thirsty Crow) was created using the Pipli technique which uses inspiration from things that are seen around us like birds, huts, pots, flowers, sun, sky etc. These motifs came into being to attract the younger crowd. A pouch was created for this fabric story book so that it can be taken along with out damaging it. Beads and fabrics were used in this project. Fabric colours were used to create effects where ever necessary. 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Pipli Applique` from Orissa (Traditional Motifs)

When we see traditional pipli applique`, it was and is extensively used in temple decoration and in creating accessories for temple rituals. Be it the gopura decoration, the beautiful umbrellas, the long elaborate lampshades or the hand fans, they all had chevron applique` folds and big beautiful flowers as motifs on them. Keeping all those elements in mind, a table lamp shade was created with small additions of mirrors to enhance the look of the lamp. 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Applique from Gujarat

Taking inspiration from the geometric shapes that are used in making of tents/ pandals in Gujarat, an ancient game called Chopad was created that has tiny pieces of fabrics carefully folded to create every square and then appliqued/stuck on to a base to create this mind game (literally!). Handmade pouch was made to store the pawns and dice of the game. They were made using epoxy clay. 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Rabari Applique` from Kutch

Folded Applique where design is made on the surface fabric by folding and cutting it, sometimes in the form of strips and them attaching it to the base fabric. The same thing was incorporated to make this Kindle Holder which is a combination of strips and cuts and texture. Fabric colours were used to create textures and 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Applique` from Alighar

Simple floral shapes combined with chevrons, wavy lines, tiny squares etc on tone on tone pastel coloured fabrics is something that one sees in applique techniques done in Alighar. Keeping these aesthetics in mind, this beautiful pale grey green stole which brings out the lightness of this technique was made with silver sequin stuck at various levels. Mul-Mul fabric was dyed in the desired colour using fabric colours and 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Marwari Applique from Rajasthan

Ombre technique combined with applique technique from Rajasthan was used to create this chic crop top with each square cut in various designs. Modern and One of a kind. A single piece of fabric is folded and cut similar to kirigami which is then attached to another fabric. The motifs are usually geometric. Cotton silk fabric was used to cut the motifs which were Ombre dyed using fabric colours. 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Applique from Egypt

Design and technique that is usually used to make tents/cushions/blankets/throws has been translated onto one of your must have’s: a plain black skirt. The look of the plain black short skirt has been enhanced by applique technique from Egypt. Beautifully hand cut floral designs and clean lines give the skirt an edge that you would definitely want to own. Available fabrics were used; fabric colour was used to dye a few. 3D Outliners were used to give the stitch effect.
Katwa Applique` from Bihar

Katwa is the name given to applique` that is done in Bihar. It is mostly used on tents, canopies and shamiyanas. Taking cue from the characters/ elements that are used the most when Katwa Applique` is done, we give you a scenario of land and water with abundance of grass and trees, birds, animals and many many fishes. What a paradise isn’t it? Available fabric pieces were used, some fabrics were dyed using fabric colours and 3D Outliner was used to give the stitch effect.
Gota Patti Applique` from Rajasthan

Gota Patti which is very famous in Rajasthan has been taken as the inspiration for this appliqued product. Called many moons, this curtain/room divider could create a sheer divide between two worlds: what’s personal and what is to be seen by the world. At least that was the idea!  Gota Patti laces were used to make the stars and the chevrons from scratch.
