The challenge of being creative.

During october, a phenomenon called “inktober” occurs on instagram. One of the many “challenges” that exist to stimulate the creativity of artists. For me, these types of exercises are a barrier that does not allow our true creative side to flow. Instead of solving a problem using our ingenuity, we receive an instruction manual on how to solve it...the challenge.

This automatic pilot in which we immerse ourselves gives us instructions on what to do: Everyone draw a flower or draw this character, but in your style. Although it's fun to see the results, for me it ends in creating more of the same. Taking into account that the objective of these “challenges” in addition to being fun is to stimulate creativity and help you lose your fear of that blank page, I reinterpreted this concept by joining three elements: challenge, fears/insecurities of a Creative and Halloween. The result was this illustrated miniseries that I titled "Creative Fears"

6 days before Halloween, I was sharing the photos on my instagram account along with an anecdote or experience related to each “creative fear”. What I wanted to demonstrate with this experiment is that the best way to face our insecurities and fears when creating is going against the trend; right there, where we are afraid to go.

We always seek the approval of others on our work to know if it is right or wrong, but a piece of art cannot be considered good or bad just by the opinion of the people. We need time to experiment, make mistakes and evolve. That's the only way we can forge an authentic style.

To close this project, I invited DeathBrasil, a colleague and friend with infinite creativity drawing monsters, to a live session on Instagram where we shared with the audience our best techniques to overcome these fears, and some experiences in our careers as freelance illustrators.
