Flowers of Hawaii

I started work on this piece while living near Pearl Harbor, HI during covid lockdown.  The flowers in my garden always gave me such joy. I wanted to create something that resembled a botanical illustration, but with a bold, vibrant feel (kind of like the island, herself).  I drew most of these several times until I was able to put away the detail and the meticulous shading and just go with the color and shape.  My favorite flower in this piece is the Ohia Lehua (the legend is worth looking up if you don't know it) the negative space created by the leaves and the bold, fiery blooms draws my eye every time.
