This Lifeboat Museum is situated within the walls of a ruin, which sits on the coast of Dunbar, beside the harbour. Here, the building faces the North Sea where it is exposed to the harsh elements of nature. The building is 20 meters in width, and has an open plan area suitable for different arrangements for museum displays.  Standing alone, like a rescue boat out at sea, the building has large sheets of glazing to make the internal space feel as exposed as possible, whilst also being wrapped in Corten Steel to create a framed view out to the North Sea.

The Corten Steel emphasises the harsh reality of the weather and is very common in ship building. In rusting the metal actually protects itself from further deterioration and therefore makes for a perfect choice of cladding.
