Exploding Bakery UAL

One of our projects during third year was to design a tote bag for the Exploding Bakery in Exeter. The winning design was materialised and sold in the cafe. For this project, I had to create one or two designs for tote bags, either one design for both the front and back or a different design for the front and different for the back.

The first thing I done was research the company and their theme, trying to get a feel of their branding and identity. They seemed to stick to a very rustic, hand drawn look. So that is the look I went for when coming up with designs for my tote bags. I decided to go with a stereotypical bakery scene with the hand-drawn cup of tea and pastry. I added the logo in on top of the piece as I felt it brought the outcome together more than having it above or below the drawing.
There were no restrictions on what we could design, I came up with an idea of Hidden Identity. By taking part of the Exploding Bakery's Logo, I started off by covering some of the cakes I had drawn but found out the blocks were too big and were hiding the whole cake. My thought process was to entice people, I thought people would become intrigued and would want to know what's behind the block. Instead I ended up covering the top half of happy face, I mean who isn't happy when they have cake!?
