Percy Lau - An Eyewear Collection

Percy lau is an eyewear brand from Hong Kong.

Percy Lau believes that eyewear for her is multidimensional, not just functional or decorative. For her eyewear changes the how you literally ‘see’ the world. Inspirations for the designs are drawn from the overlap of science and human nature, and everyday objects in the surroundings which go unnoticed.

“I want to inspire people to discover the hidden possibilities in our daily life.”
BRAND BOARD
To design a product collection for PERCY LAU
Since Hong Kong got taken over by Mainland China, I decided that Percy Lau ( A hongkong eyewear brand), would create a collection representing the real China. The Golden era of China where it embraced culture, tradition and diversity.

A NEW COLLECTION CELEBRATING ANCIENT CHINA
China went into it’s ‘Golden Era’ when it came under the rule of Han Dynasty. 400 years of peace resulted in high growth of culture, society, and inventions. Creation of the silk route resulted in global trade with china. It is also written in history that Han Dynasty created the traditions that china follwed for 2 millenia. tHE SILK ROAD WAS DEVELOPED AND HUNDEREDS OF NEW INVENTIONS WERE MADE DURING THE RULE.
THE FIVE COUNTRIES WITH MOST INFLUENCE OVER THE SILK ROAD AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS
COLLECTION OF EYEWEAR
ROME - LAZIO
GLASS
GRAPES
GOLD / SILVER
The Lazio eyewear named after the central hub for trading in rome, takes inspiration from the ceramics, grape, gold and silver prevelant in the country. The Monocle is reminiscent of upper class and rulers of the roman republic. The chain connecting the monocle to the temples and also to represent ‘connection’ since that was the main purpose/outcome of the silk route.
ARABIA - PETRA
HORSES
ANIMAL FUR
ISLAM
The Petra eyewear named after the capital city of Arabia, takes inspiration from the pride of Arabia - Horses and Fur. Horses were traded throughout the route since they were only a myth for china and the major unit in the army of rome. The demand for horses created only wealth and riches for the arabians. Arabia was also the starting point for Islam to spread in the continents. The islamic designs in the temples along with the fur and leather stitched to the side of the lens creates a piece representing one of the richest nations of the time.
PERSIA - RAYY
TRADERS
CENTRAL HUB
CAMELS
They rayy eyewear named after the central city in the entire silk route is the hub for all trading. Even though making not much material contributions to the trade, persia became one of the richest countries by being the middleman between the east and west. The Hollow temples with the crevices allow the SS camel to move through the shape due to motion. The lens of the sunglasses are inspired by rubies signifying wealth and the architecture of rayy.
INDIA - BHARAT
COTTON
TEA
SPICES
BUDDHISM
Bharat, India is the second country that the silk road passes through. The source of many goods, cultures and religions, the country had a huge impact on all countries on the silk route. Inspired by the weaving of cotton, the lenses enclose a net like structure of naturally dyed cotton threads. The use of flower motifs on the hinges and the gradations inspired by the spice farms pay testament to the contributions of the country to the massive trade route.

CHINA - XI'AN
SILK
JADE
DYES
ORIGIN OF THE ROUTE
Xi’an, The then city of the birth of the silk route. The sleek eyewear which creates an eyeshadow effect over the eyes does not act like sunglasses, more like a statement piece. The right temple is the map of the silk route. Resin is mouled into the middle with jade flakes/Foil embedded in it. The Left temple pays homage to silk itself with the process of spinning silk transformed into combination of shapes and spirals. Silk threads flow through the shapes.
TECHNICAL DRAWINGS
PHOTO FILTER
A photo filter for social media accompanied by the release of the new collection gives everyone access to the eyewear virtually. The augmented reality experience that people beyond potential consumers would want to try, hopefully expanding the consumer base. More so imagining eyewear on the face is quite difficult and more so with the deconstructed avant garde designs of percy lau, this will allow everybody to see how the glasses look on their faces before before buying the expensive piece.
