Design Variations on The Little Prince

Project 2 for my graphic design class was to design 3 book covers for a classic book. I chose The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery. We were required to use creative strategies in the design of our covers and to convey some meaning or a core message of the book.

The first cover we were asked to create was typography based cover. I put the author's name above in white on a black background to represent stars. Below in the title I have the letters in a curve to represent the shape of a planet. I used the creative strategy of shape similarity on this cover. The letter n in the word prince was made using a different font and has dual meaning. One one hand it represents the glass dome that the little prince used to protect his beloved rose, and on the other hand it represents the shape of a tombstone as the book also deals with themes of death and separation.

The requirement for the second cover was that it be physically created. I chose to do a watercolor painting for this cover. The creative strategies I used include change of material and shape similarity. For change of material, I painted the rose to represent a galaxy. This is to show how the rose is the center of the little prince's universe and her importance to him. The shape of the snake is similar to a stem for the rose and represents the key role the snake had in helping the little prince be reunited with his rose.

The third cover was designer's choice. I used the creative strategy of juxtaposition to show the little prince's relationship with the fox. When the prince and the fox meet in the story, the fox is wild and thinks of the prince as he would of any number of other little boys. However, the prince eventually tames the fox and they become friends. This cover highlights their differences, one being a boy and one being a fox, while also representing that their friendship has made them a part of each other. They will be forever changed by the love and friendship they developed.

This project was challenging and really helped to stretch me as a designer. I learned a lot during the process and I will be able to apply much of what I learned to future projects.
