GIG POSTER - SILLY MUNICIPALS

GIG POSTER
I knew I wanted to design something abstract and abnormal. I sketched quite a few different designs.
I initially chose to recreate the sketch of a birdhouse with a skull (left side, third from the top.) When I first designed the sketch in vector graphics, I took the concept a bit further.
I chose to add a tornado to carry the birdhouse, instead of it floating or resting in/hanging from a tree. I really like the color scheme I chose, but the neutral colors were a bit too present, and some of my peers couldn't immediately recognize the tornado as a tornado.
I changed the tornado to a quickly-drawn mountain range. I removed the skull, and added a flame and a bird with a blend between them. Though this incorporated more values from my chosen range of colors, I was not happy with the new subject.
I felt the bird was not identifiable enough, so I added a stroke, which was inconsistent in my design. I removed the mountains peaks and dipped the background to black.
I altered the subject a bit and was still unsatisfied. I attempted to create a solar eclipse, and became very dissatisfied with my design and felt lost on where I should take it... so I scrapped it.
I took another look at my sketches and decided to pursue the sketch of the cyclists climbing a hoof (top right.)
In this first draft of the sketch recreation, I felt like it was simple enough, but may have been too much in the hoof.
In my third draft of this design, I added some more texture, removed some noise, and got the concert information on. I felt the design was still lacking some substance, though.
My final draft included the new elements of the barn to indicate the identity of a farm animal owning the hoof. I added bars in some select colors utilized in the other elements of the design. I felt this final draft showed good repetition and contrast with colors, alignment with the hoof to the right side of the poster, and (close) proximity between the hoof and the barn to show relation.
