Folding Floor Chair

Folding Floor Chair for children.

It can be used in schools, playgrounds, homes for a fun experience.
It is lightweight and child-friendly materials have been used.
It is a piece of interactive furniture which the child can
assemble when he/she wants to use it.
The chair is based on the principles of Origami and the structure was arrived at by folding a square.

Exploration for the form in paper.

Paper model to test dimensions.

Models developed using only foam and cloth.
The foam didn't provide enough stability to the structure and also the folding was not very neat.

To improve the functionality, I decided to layer MDF pieces in between 6mm Pu Foam pieces.
The seat has a 20mm thick layer of foam. The whole piece has then been upholstered.

Making of the Prototype.
The final form was made openable, and to join the 2 edges to close the strucutre I've used velcro strips.

Folding process.
Rubber coated Nylon should be used as the upholstery fabric as it is highly resistant to wear and tear
and can be easily washed. It is a low-maintenance material and thus suitable for rough usage.
This floor chair is a fun and interactive origami-based furniture
that can be easily folded and unfolded by a child.
