Skateboard Pyrography

From left to right these boards are titled; Phoebe, Franki, and Ashley
This a series of pyrography portraits on old skateboard decks. The beautiful women who kindly let me use their images are friends I know from school. I really enjoy creating these and would like to do more when I can source more old decks- but this proves to be harder than it sounds.

Once I have acquired a skateboard and stripped it down to the bare wooden board, the process of creating a finished piece starts by collating images of the subject and whatever floral and other designs I want and composing the image on a template of the board. I draw out the whole composition in pencil on the paper template and then use carbon-backed paper to transfer the design to the skateboard deck. I then begin the slow and steady process of burning the design onto the board with a pyrography pen. I only use 2-3 different shaped ends for the pen. I add highlights with a white pencil. I burn the title (the subject's name) onto the back and attach mounting pieces so the board can by hung up. I then give the board a couple coats of varnish and the piece is complete.
