Easel is a modular platform designed for artists and creative coders that utilize plotting machines. An embedded magnetic grid paired with 3d printed jigs allows users to effortlessly adjust parts to accommodate their next project.​​​​​​​

The grid system was developed to maximize plotting area and to allow for the addition of new jigs and modules. Magnets around the drawing surface afford the system’s flexibility for various sizes of paper.

Additional modules can be created following the guide below. In short, the 30mm grid determines the location that magnets should be placed.

We utilized the plotter to create templates which aid the user in the construction of the system itself. Full instructions for assembling easel can be found here along with supporting files.

Developing easel was straightforward. The real question is what can you do using a 2 axis CNC?  We’ve explored several different plotting workflows to ultimately have more control of the machine and to incorporate user interaction. Madeline has instilled the idea of ‘misusing robots’ in me, and I'm working on doing just that. Stay tuned :)
