‘Tāku’ focuses on the topic of the Cook Islands and my relationship with them. This project is one that reflects me personally and what I have learnt about where I come from and how I can convey this through design.
After thorough research I have designed a pattern intended to be printed on textile fabric that depicts symbols which represent elements of the Cook Islands that I have learnt about which are interesting and important to me.
This pattern includes symbols only, which have been hand cut from card and re-coloured digitally and designed accordingly. This project is very much research driven and reflects a journey of learning about heritage and applying my own modern style. I have therefore named this pattern ‘Tāku’ which translates to ‘mine’ in Cook Island Māori.
