Distinctive Font Compositions
Differences of font type are very apparent especially when used in unique ways like creating compositions. The square edges of the Sans Serif Neue Hass (left) are very sharp and bold when compared to the lighter weight Serif Stempel (right) composition.
In order to understand the anatomy and uniqueness of each letter in the alphabet, it is helpful to view each letter as a shape. The challenge of meshing these individual letters, or shapes, together helps the brain think of letters in a different way. Using design principles such as focal point, negative space, contrast, unity and harmony can help place each shape into a well designed composition. This line of thinking from my brain resulted in the following compositions.
The design principles focused in this composition is focal point with the d in the middle of the h, negative space around the letters, repetition found with the K and the X, unity with the curve of the J and the h, and contrast with the f and the R to give reference for shapes of other letters.
Design principles used in this composition include proximity with all the letters being connected, contrast with the variance of the size of the letters, unity with the stems from the K and the L, and lastly, asymmetrical balance achieved with the N and the H.
