Based on a true story, ‘I Did/Alter’ offers a rare insight into the mind of Shirley Ardell Mason; a psychiatric patient suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
The complexity of this story perfectly lent itself to creating a truly unique reading experience. Integrating design and content, each spread represents a different one of Mason’s identities (all of which emerge as the story evolves over a single session between her and her psychiatrist). Meanwhile, a timeline along the bottom of each page helps the reader navigate the narrative.
Turning the book over reveals it has an alternate personality of its own: a full psychiatric analysis in infographic form. More than just an additional layer of design, this spread reveals an entirely different ending to the tale.
