Pencil & Charcoal Sketches - 2018
This collection of drawings was created during my first semester in the Digital Media program, while I was enrolled in a drawing class. With a background in freelance commercial and fine art I already had many foundational skills under my belt, but there's always more to be learned so this class offered the perfect opportunity to refine these skills and learn new techniques and theory. This class was also an excellent motivator to practice drawing on a larger scale since most of our projects needed to be on 18" x 24" paper, more than double the size of my standard go-to paper for sketching and designing.
These first five drawings show projects that focused on shapes, shadows and light reflection under a variety of lighting conditions, using specific media for each, such as using only HB lead, or a range of lead hardness/softness, or only charcoal. All of the following projects were drawn freehand while viewing the subjects.
The following drawings each focus on a different subject matter such as perspective, portrait, black and white on colored paper, and drawing a reproduction from a personal photo as seen in the image below.
