The Tale of the Tarao Clan
Tarao once was a great clan that reside over a fertile dale. One day, the Meitei King, Meidingu Chingthangkhomba (Rajashree Bhagyachandra) visited the dale and was enchanted by the abundance of the dale asked the Tarao to plant rows of orange orchard which the Tarao promised to take care of. The place came to be known as "Komlathabi". The Tarao clan did as the king told and planted a vast orchard of oranges but the oranges didn't yield much in number and the fruits keep dropping unripe. Disappointed, the king search for the reason and found that the Tarao had poured hot water over the orchard. Angered, he went and cursed the Tarao community to have a clan that drop in population just like the oranges.
This was one of the tales that the Taraos often told but the real problem of the community other than the myth of the curse is the fast changing social and cultural structure that makes a small community to quickly dissolve into oblivion.
Today, the Tarao community is slowly yet passionately working to conserve their unique traditions and culture and also humbly collaborating with various other communities to gain back their population and cultural importance.
