BAGH: TEXTILE HERITAGE OF INDIA

PROJECT BRIEF
This project is all about research on any particular Indian Textile and study the evolution of motif in that craft with time. At the end of the project we have show the evolution through creating motifs of that craft. We even need to explain how the motifs evolved.
ABOUT BAGH
Bagh is a traditional printed Indian handicraft.

It is characterised by hand printed woodblock relief prints with naturally sourced pigments and dyes.

It is one of the unique forms of Thappa Chappai.

Initially, it was practiced as tribal art.

Earlier it was also known as Alizarin.

EVOLUTION OF MOTIFS
Cotton fabric was used commonly but with the time fabrics also got evolved.

Other fabrics included, kosa silk, tussar silk, bamboo chicks, banana fabric,  jute, panja durries, chiffon, crepe, georgette, tissue, and mulberry silk.

Earlier they practised this craft for the dressings of tribals like - Polka’s, Jawariya Lugda, Moliya Lugda, Ghagra, Odhani , etc.

Lugda is basically saree in local language.

To meet the modern demands, artisans started this craft with bedsheets, sarees, suits, pillow covers, table covers and many home furnishing items with new patterns, skills, design and new dyes.

Earlier artisans used only three main colours that are red, white and black.

But with time. New dyes and colours have been introduced.

Like, yellow, mustard, indigo, purple and violet.

And nowadays, people are again attracted to the traditional colour range.

In traditional motifs, only flora was included in the mango motif but in the contemporary versions geometrical shapes, zig zag lines in the same mango motif outline are being included.

I have showcased the evolution of the Nandana ( mango) motif and even how the borders have been evolved over the time.

Mango motifs have been changed over time not only in colour but also in scaling and designs included in it.

I have depicted from traditional to contemporary.
