REVERSE ENGINEERING
Xiaomi Mi Home 1S LED Smart S
Process:
For my reverse engineering project, I decided to model my Xiaomi Smart Lamp. I decided to base my project on this product, mainly because I like the simple design of the lamp, and I decided it was the perfect object to measure and recreate using Rhino 7. Starting my project, I had to note down and measure each detail of the lamp using a digital calliper. I measured all parts to the millimetre, such as the on and off/brightness and temperate button, also measured the widths, lengths, and heights of the base and stand, and also measured the precise details such as the hinges and the gaps in between each of the pieces. I measure all possible components that would be useful in exactly modelling the lamp on Rhino 7. From my measurement, I created each individual part and slowly started to connect each piece together, making sure that all the measurements were the same as what I had noted down. Once my model was complete, I play around with the materials, trying to match them with the product itself. When all was done, I played around with different rendering settings to get to the final rendered model as shown in the images down below.
Reflection:
Looking back at my overall project, I can say that through my design process, I have become more confident in using Rhino 7. Through trial and error, I believe I was able to produce an accurate 3D Model of my chosen product for the reverse engineering project. I also learned how to use a calliper, as it is a tool that I have not used before. This project taught me to observe and explore the small details of the products, and the different measurements throughout. I am very pleased with my final 3D Model and Render, as I can say it looks exactly like the real thing. If I were to do this project again, I would try and choose a more complex product to reverse engineer, so I can challenge myself and my abilities. I would also experiment more on rendering the model to make it look and feel more realistic, by possibly adding backgrounds and more materials. In the end, this project went better than I could have imagined, and I really enjoyed the whole design process.
