Made and Found Objects

The retro nostalgia from Lana's theme in the book served as inspiration for this project. To make the center pic, I decided to use real violet flowers at first. Still I couldn't find the plant at Lowe's. As a result, I wanted to make the paper violet flower out of paper. My first attempt at using the green sewing letters failed miserably. It was a disaster because I used glue. I was exhausted once again, this time sewing it on card-stock paper. It gave the impression of a retro childhood diary, which was ideal for the theme. I kept the stitching theme going by inserting dash lines to simulate stitches. Since it has a light retro feel, the paint scheme is baby pink and blue.
The book's original cover is a painting of oranges on a branch. However, Lana never mentions them in the book. Since the book's title is violet and she has a poem about violet, I chose it as the main illustration. I assume the violet represents her as a girl, and I wanted to communicate that by making the paper flower the focal point and using gentle colors.
