2011 Visitor Brochure

2011 Visitor Brochure

Objective
The Office of Admissions noted a need to give visitors to campus a comprehensive printed piece that covered all information a prospective student receives when they visit campus.  Through the campus tour, faculty meetings and an informational presentation, campus visitors receive an abundance of pertinent information. The information can be overwhelming, so the Office of Admissions required a piece that would cover the same information that visitors could take with them and consult when needed.

Method

The piece needed to address all topics in a typical campus visit including the freshman and transfer application process, high school prerequisites, scholarships and financial aid, fast facts and all of the available majors.   All of this information was presented in the main body of the 12-page, saddle stitched document with clear headlines to make for easy referencing later.  Also included was a campus map so that if families choose to investigate campus on their own after the official tour and presentation, they’ll be able to find their way around.

In addition to these hard facts, the Office of Admissions needs students to have a feel for how they will fit into campus life at Winthrop.  We addressed this in the left hand column of the left hand page.  Using the organizing principle of our school motto “Live. Learn. Lead.” we gave students an idea of what it is like to live and work on Winthrop’s campus.   Incorporated throughout the book were student quotes and fun, engaging photos that reflect both campus life and the information presented in the text.

A fold-out, perforated coupon for 20 % off a single purchase in our campus bookstore was included. The Office of Admissions points this out to students before ending their admissions presentation so that families can take advantage of a discount on Winthrop apparel before leaving campus. It helps that the student-guided tour ends at the campus center, which is home to the bookstore.

Garnet and gold, our school colors, were used heavily throughout the book, as they are around campus.  Also, our school branding is an important element on the book’s cover, using our logo and our seal in a design that complements the design of the university website.

The book was printed on number three grade paper, which provides some cost savings while at the same time maintaining quality standards.
Staff Resources
Working with the Office of Admissions’ assistant director for campus visits, the graphic designer and the director of publications wanted to grasp the campus visit experience for prospective students.  The two attended an admissions presentation for prospective students and took the typical campus tour to see what information is disseminated to visitors. Together the assistant director for campus visits and the publications director crafted the text and the graphic designer determined size, chose photos and created a layout to clearly communicate information acquired during the campus visit experience

Budget
The second order of 2,500 pieces came in at about $1 per piece, a price deemed well worth it by the Office of Admissions.

Results
The campus visit piece was first developed early in spring 2011 to prepare for the many campus visitors the Office of Admission receives in late spring. The piece was determined so successful by the Office of Admissions that it has been reprinted with minor updates to facts only again in fall 2011.  The piece proved helpful to visitors and admissions counselors, who utilize the piece in their presentations.
