IN THE CITY EXHIBITION 13'

IN THE CITY
26 SEP - 15 DEC | P21 Gallery

This Project was designed for " In the City ", an absorbing graphic design and sound art exhibition which provides a rare glimpse into four Arab cities. Hosted at P21 Gallery, the exhibition will be a first of its kind in London to showcase a series of commissioned and pre-existing works from an eclectic line up of established and emerging Arab designers, illustrators, video, and sound artists.

" In the City " transports the audience through four enigmatic, but overlooked Arab cities - Alexandria, Algiers, Baghdad and Nablus - by recapturing and reimagining elements of those cities. The collection explores each city’s panorama through their streets, landmarks, people, signage, and sounds. Every room contains elements borrowed from the city it represents, forming a variety of installations that will entice interaction between the audience and the work.

> I was commissioned to work on Nablus ; I approached it from a different perspective by focusing on themes that make it a special city, ones that are not obvious even to those residing close by in the Arab world. The body of work I produced displays elements that reflect the city of Nablus through a visual trip into a forgotten city.

A 3D typographic sign in front of a wallpaper that is inspired by a mix of Palestinian textiles, was welcoming people in the exhibition to Nablus.
It was placed above a big screen that displays an animated gif of the word "Nablus" along with a descriptive line.

While researching the city, I realised that there are 16 water springs in Nablus, with 16 different names and characteristics. Water springs in Arabic are called "" which literally means eyes. This is the inspiration behind the illustrations - symbolising the springs as eyes. Different shapes, shades, and forms of eyes inspired from the diversity of the people of Nablus.
