Icon Set for State: Maine
Overview:
To create a cohesive icon set, a designer must use similar properties so that each icon within the set feels like they belong to the larger family. These shared properties can include using (but not limited to) the design principles (i.e. positive-negative, contrast of stroke vs. mass, etc.), same stroke-weights, sharing similar dimensions, amount of weight they take on a page, etc.

Process:
Students will pick a state from a curated list, create a matrix with shared properties (for example, "all outline," "positive / negative," and "within a circular badge," etc.) running along one axis, and the identifiers listed below along the other axis. Students will sketch the intersection.
