[Wine Labels] Chateau Cabredon

This was another label redesign project at ACE Distributing in 2018, for a French Bordeaux wine called Chateau Cabredon. The vintage needed to be updated from 2010 to 2016, and my manager wanted a simpler and modern design, as opposed to the older design which was more cluttered and antique.

For the redesign, we were able to do a taller rectangle label instead of a horizontal one, and move most of the technical information to the back label to de-clutter the front. While I wasn’t allowed as much freedom with this design as previous wine labels, I definitely strived to make it as clean and sophisticated as possible, as I thought the old design was too boring, to say the least.

In France, a chateau is a large country house or castle, so the main image on the label is an outline of one of those buildings, as is common on a lot of French wine labels. The name of the wine is in a large serif font on top, with the type of wine (Bordeaux) underneath the chateau image to break it up a bit. The “Grand Vin de Bordeaux” text, a strip underneath “Bordeaux”, and the text on the red strip at the bottom are all printed in gold foil.

We eventually decided to move the vintage to the back label; because the front had special gold foiling, it would cost much more to print new labels each time the vintage changed, but this way, they would only need to reprint the back labels. We also made the back label the same cream background color as the front, because those pure white labels with black text are much too lazy. Overall, this redesign went extremely well despite not being a traditional French design.
