Letter Compositions
Project Background
This project was part of my typography class. We were assigned to create two abstract compositions based on two different typefaces. Adobe Garamond Pro and Franklin Gothic were used separately in a 6.75 by 8 in canvas each. The goal was to create an abstract look with even positive and negative spacing. A focal point was to be easily determined followed with understood visual pace.

Design Choices: Franklin Gothic Heavy
Franklin Gothic Heavy is a bold, blocky sans serif. At first I thought this font would be easier to make a composition from, but learned quickly that it takes rethinking. My main purpose was to make sure there was a focal point and visual pace surrounding it. I also incorporated principles of design like hierarchy and depth. To depict this, I used huge. medium, and small numbers/letters. This element gave the design an abstract look with added lost and found between the positive and negative spaces.
Design Choices: Adobe Garamond Pro Regular
Adobe Garamond Pro Regular is a basic serif font. The serifs proved for exciting movement throughout the composition. It allows for great visual pace and leading lines. My main focus on this typeface was to show the best aspects of each letter and use the serifs and other letter anatomy to my advantage. I took letters and numbers and lined them up together so that there were similarities in direction of the piece. To finish up the last touches on this design, I made sure there was just one focal point and leading lines to help the eyes of the viewer move around the canvas.
