There is a long history of police brutality in the black community: rows of faces, names, & deaths. I started this project to put these things together to create a representation of each person. I wanted it simple & direct, like the blackout posts across social media. I decided to focus on the eyes, probably the most telling aspect of an individual’s personality, sensibilities, & emotions. I had to study them to get it right, which makes it hard to remove yourself from the finality of the situation. These people were here & now they’re not. And within each story there are layers of violence, pain, & discrimination.
