Variations on Bosch, Rembrandt, El Greco
Sometimes the best way to warm up and regain creativity is to revisit the masters.
Original: Fábula by El Greco (c. 1580), most likely a moralising allegory of sexual desire, the monkey adding fuel to the fire.
Sketch: Pencil and diluted ink on paper (January 2021)
Original: The Extraction of the Stone Madness / The Cure of Folly by Hieronymous Bosch (c. 1500). This religious painting (like all of Bosch's genius work) is quite literal. None of the people engaging in this absurd scene in a bid to "remove" folly seem to be in the right path either.
Sketch: Made amid desperate circumstances as my loved ones were suffering from Covid-19, this was my take on the year 2020 - one that has been not only disastrous, but also nonsensical. Made on paper with markers that are running out. (December 2020)
Original: Self-portrait as the Apostle Paul by Rembrandt (1661). Masterful, obviously.
Sketch: Made merely to motivate myself to be better. Pencil and diluted ink on paper. Everyone should study the masters, even if they cannot reach them. (December 2020)
Original: Christ Crowned with Thorns by Hieronymous Bosch (c. 1530). Bosch's depictions of things done to Christ become more and hysterical throughout the years, it seems. ı'm here for it.
Sketch: Done during the same days as the other Bosch sketch, with pain felt deep within me. Black ink and markers on paper.
