Watercolour and Ink Drawing of a Lighthouse

Watercolour and Ink Drawing of a Lighthouse
One of the art mediums I enjoy the most is watercolour painting, and for this project I decided to incorporate ink into my drawing to get better definition and line work in my piece. I chose a picture of a lighthouse in Cornwall because the colours and structures in the picture would work well in watercolour. I used 200gsm art paper because it absorbs the water from the watercolours and it holds the paint well.

Before settling on watercolours and ink, I tried two other pieces using watercolour pencils and watercolours alone, however these designs were not very bold or clear, and I found these mediums much more difficult to use. Therefore, I opted for using ink to add more detail and clarity to the final piece.

I tried two different techniques before creating the final piece. The first technique I tried was a watercolour wash with pen details added on top. This technique worked well, producing a fun design and clean lines. The second technique I tried was sketching the initial picture in pen and then adding the watercolour afterwards. This technique did not work as expected as the pen bled into the watercolour and created a brown colour, and blurred the design.

I tested several more pens to find one that didn't bleed as much, and then chose the pen sketch with watercolour washes on top  for the final design as when used with a better pen, it was much easier to complete the design, and the result was very clean.
