Mundane Moments Between

This series focuses on the moments in-between life taking place.  The mundane in-between moments where the subjects are so focused on what they’re doing or where they’re going that their story reads like a book to the viewer.  Although to the people captured in the images may seem to be of little consequence, this is not the case of the viewer who can read the situation a hundred different ways. These images point the viewers attention towards the passing daily moments that slip by without a thought, yet say so much about us.
I have never considered myself a good street photographer, so capturing this series posed a difficult feat of confidence and experimentation, however the selected photos completely embody the heart of street photography.
In the fascinating genre of street photography- which encases so much under one umbrella term- the main criteria that has always stood out to me is capturing life taking place.  Photographers are masters of manipulating images to look the way they want, yet with street photography, in a lot of ways you’re doing the opposite, capturing life as it truly is.
Instead of controlling everything in an image exactly as you intend, life is constantly passing you by and it’s your job as a street photographer to capturing it as it passes.  In a lot of ways, my series embodies this idea of capturing life as it passes, in the way that I capture The Mundane Moments Between.
Although it could be argued that my photos leave out the famous rebellious nature often embodied by street photography, it has an authentic relatability to it reminiscent of photographer Berenice Abbott (1898-1991).  Photographers such as Weegee (Arthur Fellig, 1899-1968) have popularized the dramatic and the intenseness of street photography whereas photographers like Berenice Abbott focus on the realistic nature.  This is important to note because it demonstrates that street photography lends itself in many different directions and can’t be determined by one photographers style or impact on the style.  Therefore, this series features images that at their heart demonstrate my version of street photography which is capturing life occurring realistically and naturally.
