GAD 2001 - Type As Image: Non-English Word

For our Type as Image project we were instructed to select a term from a list of words and display its definition visually, while typing the word in a foreign language.  The goal of the design was that anyone could determine the meaning of the word, no matter what language they spoke.  We experimented with different typefaces and manipulating them to create our final composition.
My non-English word was "Velichten," which is Dutch for "illuminate." I made the letters of the word appear as if they were glowing with the gaussian blur effect, and a layered yellow/orange tint to the glow.  The font I used resembles a neon sign, which should be easily associated with the glowing/illuminated effect I created.  I only made part of the word glow so you could separate the illumination from the text.  I struggled with getting the word to jump off the page initially, but when I changed the background color to black it gave the word the desired effect.
Experimenting with type is always a fun challenge, and the progression of this project was really satisfying.
