MBUSD - Pacific Elementary School
Manhattan Beach, California

Design Achievement
The Manhattan Beach Unified School District launched an infrastructure improvement program aimed at enhancing classrooms in various facilities across the district, starting with Pacific Elementary School. Collaborating with architects and interior designers, DLR Group's XGD Studio developed wayfinding and signage solutions that celebrate the vibrancy of the Pacific Ocean, reflecting it in the upgraded spaces. To aid in building identification, each classroom features a custom illustrated sea creature accompanied by a large letter. The signage is strategically installed to wrap around corners, ensuring visibility from multiple angles. The oversized graphics also provide opportunities for the school to incorporate educational information about each sea creature, creating valuable learning experiences for students.

Scope Summary
Creating a cohesive and branded wayfinding system played a crucial role in the renovation of this space. To enhance visual identification, each of the nineteen buildings is associated with a specific sea creature and organized alphabetically. The integration of fun facts and unique illustrations into oversized signage not only promotes a visually friendly environment but also provides educational value. Through close collaboration with school staff, designers finalized the selection of highlighted animals and their corresponding fun facts. DLR Group contributed architecture and experiential graphic design services to the project, ensuring a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality.
