Light the Lantern

Inspired by the movie “Raise the Red Lantern” by Yimou Zhang, I created this installation piece aiming to explore the polygyny, feudalism, and sexism in past Chinese feudal families, where women were considered as subordinates of men and “decorations” of the family. By juxtaposing the fragility of gauze, the illuminance of fire, the constraint of strips, and the ruin of ink, I wanted to highlight the confrontational relation between feudal traditions and the identity of women. In the movie, raising a red lantern signifies the residence where the husband chooses to spend his night, alternatively speaking, which one of his wives he chooses to accompany him. In my piece, the illuminance of the lantern can be interpreted as a metaphor for passion, identity, and freedom of women, which would instead turn into a weapon against herself in a feudal society represented by the burning candle underneath.
