If you're Indonesian and born in the 90s, you must've known this magazine. Gaul Magazine is one of a hyped magazine in the 2000s era. Contains up-to-date issues about celebrity and stuff.
I made this Gaul magazine redesign for "Posko Visual 2020" exhibition. With the theme "The Tribute", this redesign is not only a tribute to Gaul magazine who has been out of business since 2014, but it is also a tribute to Amanda Jane Jones. She's the founding art director of Kinfolk magazine, the game changer of modern magazines with its book-like layouts. To keep the "cheerful" vibes of the original Gaul magazine design, I combine the Kinfolk style (or we could call it a Swiss design) with Memphis design. Memphis stands between simple and cheerful, so that is why I choose Memphis instead of Pop Art.
