Background
This was my first music video and I - as well as Vince - were pleased with the result. Vince wanted a story to go along with the performance of the song. He wanted to wander the streets of Denton lamenting the connection he was lacking. A guest room in his house stood in as an apartment bedroom and then I filmed him leaving an apartment complex to further add to that effect. He walked along the shops in the town square and I found some footage of a shut down bar to add to the loneliness.
For the performance aspect, I shot him singing the song by himself at the town square and then with his band at a small bar. The combination of his sad walk through the town and the two performance locations worked surprisingly well.
At one point, he expressed a desire for fast cuts to storefronts along the town square toward the end of the song. I told him that those shots would work better with slower cuts and dissolves in order to complement the song's mood.
He disagreed and I told him I'd send him a copy of my version and if he didn't like it then I'd revert to his idea for those ending shots.
Once he saw my version, he conceded I had been right and was really moved. He told me I had captured the feeling of the town and that was encouraging considering it was my first attempt at a music video. We ended up shooting another one several years later, but it lacked a story and it didn't top this one.
