Book Design - Neoclassicism Appropriation

Neoclassicism managed to bring a significant shift to the world of graphic design. Unlike the movements that preceded Neoclassicism such as Rococo or Renaissance, the main focus of Neoclassicism wasn’t on decoration and ornamentation anymore, but on clarity and function. When it comes to book design, this more minimalist and simplistic approach made it possible for readers to pay attention and focus solely on the text of the book, instead of being unnecessarily distracted by decorative elements such as embellishments or complex decorations.

Below are the book covers (front and back) as well as one spread that I have designed appropriating the Neoclassicist style, but also incorporating modern elements. The original book is called “A Short History of Decay” by Emil Cioran, a Romanian philosopher.
