A TALE OF CLAY- Documentary on pottery making

•Bangalore is very unique and diverse city ,here different type of people live and they have different profession some people do business some do job , freelance job etc .

•Among all this business I found one interesting unique and creative business which is pottery making .in todays modern world this art of pottery making exist in traditional way which means by hand.

•There is small town or locality in Bangalore which is located 3 km away from Shivajinagar . This place is called pottery town. Until 1926 pottery town belong to  tamilnadu   after then the division bought mysore to rule and then in 1956 Karnataka was named and pottery town become the part of Karnataka .

•In starting days 35-40 families used to live here but as time and situation change most of them left this work and went to find government job and other job etc.
•Now 20-25 families live here among them there are eight familes who are fully depend on pottery making business .
•Some family here only do business of pot selling but they donot make pot they buy pot from other families .
•Some families do both things making and selling of pots.

•I talked with one of the pottery maker his name his nandkumar.

•He said -“I am working from last 25 yrs I start my work everyday early morning by 5 am and I work till 3 pm I take one hour break for lunch and breakfast .we get soil from outskirts of tumkur by truck  we ordered it according to our need.”

•They deposit the soil load here they soak the soil in water for 1-2 hrs then they mix the soil after that we put this in mixing machine to make more soften and sometime they  mix with our hand to soft this soil .

•After then we make pots of different sizes ,different shape etc.

•After making it they  kept  in furnace overnight to bake it so that it will become hard and durable.

They make customized pot it depend on the customers we don’t market their work since this industry is here from generation so people know about pottery town  they automatically come and buy. They get orders from hotels , domestic worker  planters so on .

•They do not make only pots they also make clay sculpture of god and goodness and sell it even they make key rings , jewelleries etc.

•Their happiness came when Ganesh Chaturthi (Indian festival )all their sale would raise at this time ,everyone would open up their stalls as it is the only time to make profit.
