Living in a 1b1b apartment, I personally do not feel the need to install a very robust home monitoring system.
Thus I interviewed a few of my friends who also live in small to medium sized apartments, many of them shared the same feeling. However, it’s interesting that most of us do use several pieces of smart appliances such as smart bulbs, plugs and thermostat.
Therefore this app is targeted towards users who only need a “not so smart home”.
After conducting a competition analysis, I realized most home monitoring apps are designed for very robust systems so they are not very easy to use. Besides intelligent speakers like Google Home and Amazon Echo, current users do not have other touch screen apps (or widgets!) where they can make easy adjustments.
My main goal today is to design an interface that's both functional and easy to use (and aesthetically pleasing of course). That is also why I created an animated prototype for this challenge.
I have reduced the amount of texts on each card, and mainly use visual cues to display hierarchy. When users open the app, they do not need to think and immediately know how to meet their goals.
