Final Year Project : Food Allergy Identification

Food allergies happen when our immune system produce antibodies in reaction to a protein in food that is normally considered harmless.

In the multicultural global city of Singapore, food vendors and their customers come from various backgrounds and many times, communication breakdowns occur due to language barriers. This situation can be very dangerous for people with food allergies.

The campaign aims to create awareness among food vendors on the dangers of food allergies, and to create clear visual food allergen identifiers so as to facilitate better communication between food vendors and their customers with food allergies. This system of food allergy identification will reduce the risk of food allergy reactions caused by miscommunication. Through a system of food allergy visual identifiers, potential allergens can be identified easily by audience across cultures.
An awareness campaign would be launched to address the issue of food allergy. The campaign would aim to raise awareness among both food vendors and the general public. The campaign would be called ‘Food Allergy Identification’ as it helps people identify food allergens and also helps food vendors identify people with food allergies through use of the food allergy cards.

The campaign logo depicts the immune system’s white blood cell reacting with the word ‘food’, slowly turning into a rash on the skin’s surface, resulting in an allergy.

The Food Allergy Identification campaign would equip food vendors with the basic knowledge about food allergies and encourage them to label their dishes containing food allergens. Labeling of dishes would be done through use of food allergen icon stickers. The top 8 most common food allergens would each have easily recognizable icons to help locals and foreigners identify food allergens. Stickers would be applied if applicable, on their menu, either beside the dish photo or dish name. A variety of sizes would be available to cater to the many different menu sizes.

Food allergy cards for each of the 8 common food allergens would be used to communicate a person’s allergy. Every card comes with text communicating the specific allergy in English, Mandarin and Malay. The translated text would help in food ordering, whenever understanding is in question simply showing the food vendor the food allergy card should be enough to get the message across.
The food allergy cards would be placed at school canteens for students, at food courts and hawker centres, and at the airport for foreigners coming into Singapore.
Posters with basic information regarding food allergies would be placed at school canteens, hawker centres and food courts. Poster also includes website address for people who wish to learn more about food allergies online.
Website will contain information about food allergies, and provide explanation on Anaphylaxis and the allergens that trigger it.
Food Allergy Index page
Page explaining Food Allergies and deadly reactions that can be brought about by it.
8 Common Food Allergens Page. Clicking on a food allergen icon would bring the user to the respective food allergen page that lists dishes containing the allergen, food stalls that sell dishes containing the allergen and a search engine that allows users to check the ingredients of a dish in question.

The public can help make the campaign a success by using the upload feature in the food allergy website to share dishes they encounter that contain food allergens. With input from the public, the food allergy Singapore database would contain a wealth of information critical to people with food allergies.
This system of food allergy identification will reduce the risk of food allergy reactions caused by miscommunication. Through this system of food allergy visual identifiers, potential allergens can be identified easily by audience across cultures.
