The topic of Sounds like a Book’s 2018 workshop was “silence”. How do you convey a sense of silence to an exhibition opening in a small venue? Through it’s polar opposite: loud noise. Fifteen publications on a tabletop in a small room with the floor covered in bubble wrap. Bubble wrap is a peculiar thing; it depends mostly on what shoes you’re wearing: you can be large and quiet as a mouse if wearing soft soles, or small and loud as a machine gun if wearing trekking shoes. All of this is designed to create a very noisy environment that kills the habit of striking a conversation while in front of the exhibits. Thus the noise makes you look at the books by yourself in “silence”.
