Dawn of Light
Still life of the decorative, sentimental and found
This still life of decorative, sentimental and found objects was inspired by raking sunlight that fell in through a skylight, splashing against a hallway wall at 7:34 a.m.  A silent theatrical performance, it played out morning after morning on a small wooden stage covered in old rag rug.  I always stopped to watch it whenever my movings took me to that part of the house. Later, I started expectantly watching the clock, even calculating daylight's gradual progression, in order to catch the show. Dawn of light, this moment of magic pushed out the darkness and provoked memories of life in a small house in the woods.

The arrangement of objects within the composition designed to be photographed was a challenging exercise of balance. Everything played off white on white: the cold blue-white of the enamelware is softened by the warm, subtle yellows of eggshell and crockery; the folds of linen towel and the patina of rust relieve the the spectral reflections glinting off metal and glass; on the wall hard-edge shadow play is a necessary contrast to keep the scene from softening into obscurity.
