Lunar Rover Wheel (LRV) Scale Model

Lunar Rover Wheel Scale Model (LRV)
This is a scale model of the Lunar Rover Wheel (LRV).

Using only three measurements I created a 1:4 scale model of the LRV Lunar Rover Wheel, made in the first year of my university degree.

Materials: HDPE Mesh, Acrylic, Styrene sheet, Chemi-wood (Model Board), Paint

Processes: Vacuum Forming, Spraying, Wood Turning, Milling
This is showing the former and mesh being used to make the outer mesh of the wheel. Through using a Vacuum Former I was able to mould the mesh to the former by heating up some PETG Sheet.

The holes in the center is to help the Vacuum Former to draw the PETG down into the former, which in turn helps bring the mesh down around the former.

Once cool, the mesh can be removed, and it will maintain the shape of the former.
The Central Hub was turned on the Lathe, and a Milling Machine used to drill the hole due to the depth. One side is con-caved.

It was then sprayed the final two colours.
The inner circle that you an see above was made laser cutting acrylic circles, and vacuum forming the smaller hoops, which have angles at the ends to fit neatly against the central hub.

I then combined the Central Hub, Mesh (both sides) and Inner circle to create the main body.
Then I vacuum formed the fender for the wheel, reusing the original former by cutting it in half and adding the ribs onto it to help produce the desired shape. The was then cu to shape and sprayed, lastly attached to the main wheel body.
