Buddhism - Exhibition Design

Task: To create awareness about Buddhism philosophy.

Solution: After doing much research into Buddhism philosophy, I realized that the philosophy encourages an individual to stay peaceful, calm and follow the simple principles to lead a healthy life as suggested by Buddha. With this in mind, I wanted to create an experience where I am allowing my audience to engage themselves into absorbing these principles. Thus, I decided to have an exhibition on Buddhism that could be organized at MET gallery in New York. The design has a 9’ tall banner and a wooden base of 36” x 25” x14” placed in front of the banner. The base has an elevation on which the golden statue of Buddha is carefully placed. The elevation has steps that is broad at the base and tapers on the top implying a metaphor that in our lives we need to discard unwanted things and move upwards with simplicity. On the wooden base are placed a pouch, incense with the holder, book stand and prayer beads. The pouch contains a small book that has been designed to read the Buddhism philosophy. The size of the book is kept small but it has powerful content so as the people in the exhibition could quickly read it at the same time understanding the core essence of Buddhism. There is a rug placed at the front of the wooden base for the audience to sit (a common practice in Buddhism). The whole atmosphere brings the experience of calmness, peacefulness and a representation of true Buddhism culture and philosophy. This design meets the purpose of educating the audience on Buddhism and leaves a memory in their mind when they exit.
